United States Has 7th Highest Cancer Rate In The World

Overall, the U.S. has the seventh highest rate of cancer in the world, according to a new study.

Approximately 300 out of every 100,000 Americans develop cancer every year. When breaking down the worldwide rankings by gender, American men have the tenth highest rate of cancer in the world, while women have the ninth highest.

Denmark had the highest rate of overall cancers in the world, as well as the highest rate of womens cancers. France had the highest rate of mens cancers.

The figures were compiled by the American Institute for Cancer Research and were based on data from the World Health Organization. AICR researchers said that though there were more cancers in high-income than in low-income countries, that might be because diagnostic tools are better in more affluent nations.

The AICR emphasized that many of the cancers in the U.S. can be traced to obesity, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet, and that one third of the most common cancers can be avoided by behavioral changes. The AICR suggests 30 minutes of physical activity "every day in any way," as well as keeping within healthy-weight guidelines and eating a diet that emphasizes fruits and vegetables.
