World Cancer Day is Feb. 4, and the organizers are issuing a global appeal for people affected by cancer to join in their campaign on Facebook by posting statistics about the illness and mentioning cancer victims and survivors they know and love.
This year the WCD, organized by the global non-governmental organization Union for International Cancer Control, is emphasizing preventive steps that people can take in their own lives to reduce their risk of cancer: eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and avoiding tobacco and alcohol.
But the group is also calling for scientific advances in fighting a disease that affects one in every two men worldwide and one in every three women.
