Grab Some Healthy Optimism

There's a healthier future awaiting ThirdAgers than previously thought, says theNational Council on Aging(NCA).

A council spokesman says latest statistics indicate the "dire predictions that paint the US and other developed nations as vast nursing homes by 2030 may be off-base." The figures show age-related disabilities rising only by half the rate once forecast by the National Institutes of Health -- 700,000 yearly instead of 1.9 million yearly.

Scientists are conservative over the causes. The Council spokesman says "One school of thought traces the causes back to the turn of the century, when improved nutrition and sanitation gave today's hardier older people a head start. Others speculate that advances in pharmaceuticals and medical technology are responsible for the increase."
