What Your Toenails Show About Your Health

Although toenails might seem like nothing more than a cosmetic issue, you should examine them more often than you probably do now. Experts say that the color of your toenails can reveal some surprisingly serious health problems. The nails normal color is pink; anything other than that is worth further examination.

According to the London Daily Mail, heres what different colors can reveal:

White nails can indicate a fungal condition that needs to be treated by a podiatrist or dermatologist. It will not go away on its own, and treatment may last a long time. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, white spots on your nails can indicate a mild trauma, like banging your foot against a rock. But if they dont go away, you should see your doctor, since they too could be a sign of infection or a serious medical condition. According to the Daily Mail, white nails have been linked to a variety of liver diseases, including cirrhosis of the liver and hepatitis C.

Green a possible bacterial infection; the color may come from pus under the nail.

Black or brown Unless the color is the result of bruising, this is one of the most serious signs of all. The same goes for a dark spot or streak, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. These symptoms could indicate melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.

Ridges across the nail This may sometimes indicate chronic eczema, according to the Mail. Ridges along the length of the nail could indicate rheumatoid arthritis or circulatory problems. To keep your nails healthy, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests the following: Make sure nails are clean and dry. Cut nails straight across Trim toenails regularly to keep them short. Never remove the cuticle. See your doctor at the first sign of trouble especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.
