28 Cues That Menopause Is on Its Way

The big question many women ask about menopause is, "When?" No one can really tell you when menopause will arrive, although it would be comforting to know the exact year so you could mentally prepare yourself.

The age of menopause differs in every woman. The average age is 51, plus or minus several years either way.

Some women get menopause as early as in their 30s. Others take till their 60s to find out what it's all about. Ask your grandmother when she had hers. Most likely, your age of menopause will be close. Genetics has a lot to do with the age "when" menopause hits.

Many women start experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance anywhere from their early 30s to their late 40s. Such signals are triggered by different hormonal changes as you approach the midlife phase.

Here's an extensive list of common signs that point to the arrival of menopause:

  • Unpredictable and irregular periods, shorter and lighter periods, heavier periods, flooding, phantom periods, shorter cycles, longer cycles
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Mood swings, irritability and sudden tears
  • Terrible fatigue
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Anxiety and feelings of apprehension, dread and doom
  • Hot flashes, night sweats and/or cold flashes, sweaty clammy feeling
  • Sleeplessness (with or without night sweats)
  • Dry vagina and loss of libido
  • Memory loss and lapses
  • Difficulty in concentrating, mental confusion and disorientation
  • Aching, sore joints, muscles and tendons, and increased tension in muscles
  • Headaches
  • Itchy, crawly skin
  • Incontinence, especially upon laughing or sneezing
  • Breast tenderness
  • Hair loss or thinning all over
  • Vertigo, light-headedness, episodes of losing your balance
  • Changes in body/breath odor
  • Gum problems, increased bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal distress, flatulence, indigestion, nausea, bloating
  • Worsening of existing conditions, increase in allergies
  • Electric shock sensation under the skin and in the head
  • Burning tongue, roof of mouth, and bad taste in mouth
  • Tinnitus -- ringing in ears, bells, "whooshing," buzzing
  • Fingernails that become softer, break and crack easier
  • Osteoporosis (after several years)

I am 48 - was "thrown" into menopause due to chemotherapy. Am cancer-free now. I have been experiencing dry mouth and tongue soreness for a few months now. It's driving me crazy. No sores or visual signs of anything - just feels strange in my mouth. Anyone else have this issue?

I'm 44 and am experiencing most of these symptoms. It started about 10 years ago with acne breakouts (never had any in the past) and since then, the symptoms have increased in number and frequency but my mens came like clockwork! This year though, particularly in Feb and April, I had my period within two weeks from each other. It says here shortened/lengthened cycle, is this it? Please help...

I am 46 and think I started going through this briefly after I had my son when I was 36. However, now I am experiencing most of all the symptoms. The worst are the headaches, increased allergies, dizziness, ringing in the ear and the constant weeping. I am feeling depressed by the symptoms and wondering if they will ever end. My mother passed away 17 years ago, so I can't ask her about her experience and when it was finally over! I had no idea that women went through this type of thing and how bad it can be. Does anyone have some natural suggestions for headaches and dizziness?

I am 35 and have 18 of these symptoms. Some of them started in my early 30's, abated while I had a baby, and are now returning with a vengeance as I cease breastfeeding. Is it 'normal' to start this early? I just feel so damn awful.

Finally, finally, finally. This is the FIRST place that has actually listed TINNITUS as one of the symptoms of menopause. THANK YOU!!! I can't tell you how many doctors I've seen that either said that it doesn't exist or is all in my head ( of course it is...duh!) or its STRESS (that all around generic for "I have no idea how to help you" diagnosis.) I would say the only symptom I don't have is the osteoporosis. I'm 44, had a hysterectomy 10 years ago, noticed gradual changes about two years after my hysterectomy but definite slap-in-my-face changes in the last 4 years. I've had doctors just look at me, no tests or nothing, and tell me there was nothing wrong or that I was perimenopause and just deal with it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I also have many of above symptoms, but find the mental distress the worst to deal with; from being happy go lucky, cheerful person in January 08 to nervous, tearful, disorientated, anxious person Nov. I am just "not me". Felt like i was going mad. After suffering weeks of constant headaches & insommnia that felt like my head would explode I have started to do much research on internet & keep coming up with low Serotonin levels. Have researched way of increasing Serotonin without anti-depressants & have found amino acid 5HTP. This converts easily to serotonin. I take 3 x 50mg (1 in morning, lunch, night - before bed - helps sleep `cos coverts to melatonin somehow). Can be bought in largest health shop chain in U.K.Relief started within hours: headache gone, calmness instead of anxiety, feel able to cope. Starting to sing again! Worth a try - I hope it works for you. Do not overdose or take with anti-depressants `cos of "Serotonin syndrome." I shall continue to look as to why us ladies suffer so much - maybe there is something else to try? Physical problems e.g flushes I can deal with - mind problems are much harder. Thank goodness for loving husbands!!. Roll-on stable hormones!!

I started symptoms in my late 30's, now that I am 45ish I experience more of these symptoms, my best advice is to try NATURAL Homeopathic ways w/excercise....Dr.'s today are just FAR to swayed to prescribe without getting down to the REAL problem(s) i.e. put you on Paxil/Prozac or high blood pressure meds ; uppers/downers and in betweeners etc. for symptoms of other health issues you may not have instead of "realizing" at our age what REALLY is going on....We R Women not men or machines....

I am experiencing extreme mood swings from normal to very angry. My psychiatrist seems to think I have bipolar and put me on seroquel 150mgs daily. I still feel extremely agitated and am having more frequent mood swings. I believe that I am just going through menopause. Any comments?

I am just entering menopause and I have been very dizzy and lightheaded. My Doctor told me I had vertigo and allergies, which is causing my dizziness. He suggested I take Zurtek for allergies, thats not working for me. Do you have any suggestions on what I can take? It only happens on occasion ( the dizziness) and most of the time does't last very long.

Is it common to not have your period for several months and then have it start up again as a regular period (during menopause)?
