Ask the Expert: When Women Lose Their Hair

Q: I'm 47 and when I take a shower I've noticed more of my hair in the drain than usual. Can you tell me why? Am I lacking in a certain vitamin?

A: From your screen name, I am assuming you are female. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Are you perimenopausal or menopausal? If so, hormone levels are one thing to consider. As hormones change, symptoms such as hair loss and dry skin appear in the body. Have you been to your gynecologist recently and mentioned this and any other symptom?

From a diet standpoint, it is usually not a matter of missing or lacking just one nutrient. Rather, your overall diet may be low in a variety of nutrients, particularly if you try to cut calories or fat.

You can keep a journal of what you eat for a week or two -- which, by the way, is really eye-opening -- and then do a nutritional analysis on what you eat through the Nutrition Analysis Tool at the University of Illinois.

Keep me up with how you are doing!
