Can't sleep
Can't sleep
I'm having trouble sleeping. I've tried a few things to try to alleviate the insomnia, such as drinking warm milk or herbal tea before bed. I don't want to take sleeping pills. Any advice?
Bioidentical Hormones are the way to go!
I'm 46 and have had problems sleeping for yrs. Either I couldn't fall asleep til the wee hrs of the night OR once I did fall asleep, I would rarely if ever sleep through the night. I recently had my bloodwork checked out by a nutritionist & anti-aging doc and was started on a healthy program. This included taking Prometrium right before bedtime and let me tell you... aaaah, it's the first time in yrs I've had great sleep. I had forgotten what it felt like to wake up refreshed after a good night's sleep. God bless bioidentical hormones! If you're taking synthetic hormones, PLEASE read Suzanne Somers books AGELESS and then read BREAKTHROUGH in that order and you'll go running to an anti-aging doctor like I did!
Good Tips
I found a few tips that might be worthy to get more quality sleeping time, without using pills at all:
• Go to bed only when sleepy.
• Sleep only in the bedroom.
• Get up at the same time each morning.
• Discontinue caffeine and nicotine.
• Exercise daily.
• Avoid alcohol.
• Limit fluid intake in the evening
• Practice relaxation techniques

Can't Sleep
Make your bed as comfortable as possible. Get the best mattress you can afford. I cured my insomnia by buying an electric blanket (now called a "heated" blanket). Getting in to a warm bed, with flannel sheets on a cold night makes me instantly sleepy.
going mad insomnia hot flushes
Ive tried the sleeping tablets i still wake and am going mad hot one minute cold the next. This is ll new to me, am i going mad. Moody
CAN'T SLEEP
I DON'T LIKE TAKING PILLS TO FALL ASLEEP BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL FUNNY ALL DAY AS IF I DIDN'T GET ENOUGH SLEEP. SO I READ A GOOD BOOK OR DO A FIND A WORD PUZZLE TO SLEEP. MY BEST FRIEND AND I TALK TO EACH OTHER UNTIL WE GET SLEEPY AND QUICKLY GET OFF THE PHONE AND OFF TO SLEEP WE GO. YOU CAN ALWAYS CALL ME AND I WILL TALK YOU TO SLEEP. SMILE BUT I REALLY MEAN IT.
Melatonin
I've tried several things and always take Melatonin 3mg with whatever else I might try. Also, taking 2 "benadryl" (you can get the generic "diphenhydramine") just before bed along with Melatonin will help you relax. The diphenhydramine may give you dry mouth, but no biggee for me, so long as I can get to sleep.
Hope it'll work for you.
It will pass
I had trouble too for years. I finally got some xanax from my doctor and that helped SO MUCH! I'm not one for pills, but I realized that sometimes you just need help!! I went off of them about 6 months ago and I sleep fine now! Course a lot of my symptoms have disappeared so yours will too! There's nothing wrong with talking to your doctor about it! I took the lowest dose, and HALF of that!!
Hi Carol, Thanks for
Hi Carol, Thanks for sharing the info on Xanax. I have some from my doctor and was afraid to take it but I had to last night because I was up so long during the night.
Did Xanax help with mood swings ? I can be happy one minute and depressed the next !
Thanks, Denise

I tho't I replied, but since I don't see it....here it comes again. Two or three sips of red wine helps one relax.....and snoozville follows very soon. RuthSW
Sleep Help
I take melatonin just before bedtime and it helps quite a bit.
Meditation
I have found meditation a great help. It's basically just simple deep breathing, concentrating on your breath, and dismissing random thoughts that keep your mind running and awake. It actually gets me thru hot flashes at night. I just let it pass. Even just concentrating on something like winning the lottery, figuring out how much taxes on it would be, subtracting paying off my mortgage, family members mortgage, what clothes i would keep, what i would buy, etc, etc,...The trick is not thinking about not sleeping!
Black Cohosh
This natural herb seems to help me. Take one in the morning and one in the evening. I get mine from Vitamin World.
Try sound conditioner(s)
Google for more info. These are machines that play soothing, relaxing sound effects electronically. Many of them have timing features, so that they shut off after a certain amount of time. They work well for me; no drugs or side effects.
Can't Sleep
There are many different things, first off--exercise can help, trying to go to bed & get up same times, there are herbal remedies such as Valerian, Melatonin(which they advise to not take more than 3mgs for longer than a few months) & GABA. My deceased Naturopath suggested adding 2cups of Epsom salts to a warm bath about an hour before bedtime. Hope that helps, Crickett
L-Theanine is an amino acid
L-Theanine is an amino acid that helps tremendously with relaxation and subsequently with sleep. It raises the alpha waves in the brain which create a calmness. There are no side effects and it is very safe. I use it nightly and get a good nights sleep. I use to have insomnia, but not any more. I also take a bath each evening with epsom salts to relax before bedtime.
Life Extension is where I get L-theanine from, I get the one called Natural stress relief, it has L-Theanine and Cyracos a natural herb. This really works and is very healthy for you. There phone number is 800-544-4440. I am only a consumer of their product not a representative. I do go to bed at night at the same time and start to wind down and relax a couple of hours or more before bedtime. I also meditate twice a day which is really good too, and I walk everyday. All these things help for a good nights sleep. I also get at least 20 minutes a day of sunlight not wearing sun glasses, so the sunrays can enter my eyes, this keeps my circadium rythym balanced and increases my chances for better sleep. I hope all these suggestions will be of help to you.
I'm new to this style of
I'm new to this style of discussion boards as they've evolved from the previous set of boards. I'm older (yeah, lots older) and have survived the majority of meno symptoms. While you don't want to take sleeping pills, sometimes you just have to do something to alleviate your lack of sleep. Have you checked out bioidenticals for hormone treatments that some ladies have used which has eased their distress over sleeping problems.

I am 57. I don't like
I am 57. I don't like sleeping pills; but sometimes i just HAVE to take a muscle relaxant.!! What i also do is take a warm shower. I play soothing oriental music; and I have a fan close to my bed. I think ALL of it helps!! So if I get 5-7 STRAIGHT hours of sleep i am happy and ready to go in the morning; when i help with my 15 month old grandson with breakfast and care so that my daughter can go to school and finish her degree. I also DO NOT THINK about menopause, hot flashes and the works!! So get busy!! and good luck!!
