Menopause Weight Gain Due to Less Exercise

The reason women in menopause gain weight is not because they eat more, it is because they exercise less, U.S. and Australian researchers suggest.

Dr. Jennifer Lovejoy of the University of Washington in Seattle and Dr. Amanda Sainsbury-Salis of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney say many women get confused when they start to gain weight during menopause, because their eating habits haven't changed.

"What the research shows clearly is that menopause causes a dramatic and sudden reduction in physical activity levels. Just prior to menopause, women halve their amount of activity compared to pre-menopause levels," the researchers say in a statement.

"We don't know exactly why menopausal women stop moving as much. But we know it's not because of their age and the lifestyle constraints happening at that time of life. Research suggests it's directly related to the lack of estrogen, which has dramatic effects on signals the brain sends to the body."

However, it's been shown that women who maintain or increase their level of physical activity during menopause tend to not gain weight, the researchers say.

The findings are published online in the December issue of Obesity Reviews.

Surgical menopause can cause weight gain.I had it in 1997 and began putting on weight around the middle almost immediately. I'd had gym membership since the 70's & was a lifetime member of Weight Watchers. I had to take 6 weeks off from strenuous gym workouts but had resumed walking 2 weeks post op. The weight wouldn't come off even after I went back to heavy workouts.. Despite everything I put on close to 20 lbs.Then I found I "Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell" by Debra Waterhouse which explained what happens to women's fat cells in menopause. I eliminated white carbs & all processed foods & the 20 lbs came off. Surgical menopause can do a number on your body. Physical changes that normally occur over years happen in a few months. I also have relatives on both sides of family with type diabetes in midlife so that may explain my having to watch carbs.

This article is totally ridiculous. I work out as much as I ever did, and still put on weight.
