Staying Healthy After Menopause

According to the National Institute on Aging, the life of post-menopausal women is far from over. They claim the average woman has approximately one-third of her life left after menopause, and advises some lifestyle changes to improve the remaining years and make the most of them. This could be the beginning of the best years of your life.

Most of the lifestyle changes recommended are the same ones heard throughout life, but time is fleeting, and implementing changes now will help improve the quality of life for the years that are left. Even small changes can have a large impact on overall health. This time of transition is a perfect time to incorporate lifestyle modifications that can reduce the chance of major health problems in the coming years.

Proper nutrition is a must for post-menopausal women. Good nutrition includes healthy food choices, drinking enough water, and taking vitamin supplements since people over 50 may have problems getting the nutrients they need from diet alone. The National Institute on Aging also recommends getting enough sleep and reducing stress.

Seeing a doctor on a regular basis for basic screening tests is also on the list of "must do's" for post-menopausal women. Yearly breast and pelvic exams, pap tests, and mammograms are recommended. If you're over 50, a colonoscopy is also advised.

Women who have experienced menopause may not think about safe sex, but unless you are involved in a long term monogamous relationship, it is an issue that needs to be carefully considered.

Life is far from over once a woman has gone through menopause. To sustain a vibrant and high-quality lifestyle, simple changes can go a long way towards making the remaining years the best years yet.
