Question of the Day

Question: What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland?

Answer: Difficulty urinating, dribbling after urination and frequent urges to urinate are all typical symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) -- or there can be no symptoms at all.

According to some research, when symptoms do occur, herbal, pharmaceutical and surgical options are available to treat the condition. If you have BPH, you should discuss the benefits and potential side effects of all the treatments with your doctor.

BPH may or may not accompany prostate cancer and is very common among older men. More than half of men in their 60s have BPH, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDKD), a branch of the National Institutes of Health. Among men in their 70s and 80s, the figure may be as high as 90 percent.
