Hoover Executives Protest ABC Soap Opera Cancelations

Susan Lucci, star of the soap opera All My Children, signs her book All My Life: A Memoir at Barnes and Noble in NYC.

The cancellation of ABC soap operas All My Children and One Life to Live has devastated soap fans everywhere – including one executive at the vacuum cleaner manufacturer Hoover.

Brian Kirkendall, a marketing executive at Hoover, has launched a protest against ABC for canceling the shows his wife and mother love, according to the Huffington Post. Kirkendall pulled the six advertisements Hoover had purchased on ABC this week to make a point about the beloved shows, but he said he cannot believe how the movement has grown.

“It was about as innocent as you can imagine something starting,” Kirkendall said. “Now I feel like I’m in the middle of a movement.”

Hoover could not have asked for better publicity. One Soap Opera Digest columnist has proclaimed Friday “buy a Hoover day” to support the company’s ABC boycott. Hoover has also gained several thousand new Facebook fans this week – and more good publicity than they could have hoped for.

“I’m not trying to be a martyr,” Kirkendall said. “I’m just reacting to what our consumers said.”
