Barbie Was Launched 52 Years Ago Today

Barbie turns 52 today, but shes looking as good as ever. Barbie made her big debut at the American International Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. Her hourglass figure, black-and-white-striped swimsuit and pouty face scandalized some fair-goers, but within a few months, Barbie was a big hit.

Each Barbie cost $3 in 1959, and her outfits sold for $1 to $5 each. Since her debut, Barbie has had well over 100 jobs, including astronaut, model and recently, architect, according to the New York Times.

Barbie was one of the first toys marketed to children on television, in commercials like the one you can see here. To this day, Barbie remains one of the worlds most popular and iconic toys.
