The FDA has eased restrictions on ADHD medications such as Adderall XR and Ritalin after new research investigating the heart disease risks of the drugs.
At this point, the FDA does not appear to see signs for concern and is not recommending changes to the drug labels or use of the medications, which are prescribed for hyperactivity. It added that it would give another update after further analyzing the potential risks of heart diseases and strokes.
Adderall XR already warns users about cardiovascular risks, and doctors only prescribe it after theyve considered the patients history of heart health.
Shire, who makes Adderall, saw its shares raise 1.7 percent after the information was released.
"While not absolutely definitive, this is positive for the stimulant class and for Shire," Beinstein analyst Jack Scannell said, as quoted by Reuters. "Concerns over the possibility of a bad outcome have curbed our enthusiasm for Shire."
