An AIDS Memorial Quilt, created by the Calico Spirit Group to foster healing and awareness, will be on display at the Hampton Inn’s Black Mesa room in Scottsbluff, Neb. on Dec. 1 in observance of World AIDS Day, KCSR 610 AM reports.
The event, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include a display of nine sections of the NAMES Foundation AIDS Memorial Quilt, which is nearly 1,300 square feet. The Quilt began in San Francisco more than 20 years ago as a single 3 x 6 foot panel. The more than 47,000 panels on the quilt, created by family members and friends in an attempt to transform loss and heartbreak into hope and healing, have come from every state in the nation and include recognizable celebrity names, the names of locals who lived with HIV, and those known only to their family.
The general public is invited to the event and volunteers will be available throughout the viewing to answer questions and provide information to visitors.
The event will conclude with an open house at 5:45 p.m., a silent auction, a slideshow, and a candlelight memorial for locals who have died of AIDS-related complications.
