Alec Baldwin Dropped 30 Pounds After Being Diagnosed as Prediabetic

Alec Baldwin arrives at the Museum of the Moving Images event where he is being honored at Cipriani on February 28, 2011 in New York City.

When Alec Baldwin took the stage at the Screen Actors Guild awards Sunday night, some viewers might have noticed he was looking leaner than usual.

The “30 Rock” star, 53, told Entertainment Tonight that he was diagnosed as prediabetic last year and had to change his eating habits. The health scare has inspired him to shed about 30 pounds so far.

After winning the award for male actor in a comedy, Baldwin told Entertainment Tonight reporters that he received the diagnosis on May 10.

People with prediabetes meet some but not all of the diagnostic criteria for diabetes and are at risk of developing full-scale type 2 diabetes.

In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that an estimated 79 million U.S. adults – more than a third of the adult population in America – have prediabetes. If current trends continue, as many as 1 in 3 U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050, according to the same release by the CDC.

Entertainment Tonight’s Nancy O’Dell will get more details on Baldwin’s medical condition in an interview airing tonight.
