Ancestry.com has unveiled a new application called Family Tree Maker for Macintosh users.
Family Tree Maker allows users to search Ancestry.com directly to grow information about their own heritage, add photos and other media elements, create publishable books, slideshows and other keepsakes detailing a family's genealogy, make reports and charts using standard citation, and view timelines and maps of family migration. A complementary six-month subscription is included with the program.
The program bills itself as equivalent to the 2010 Windows version of the software, and acts as a complement to the subscription-based Ancestry.com, which offers extensive searches and other methods for searching through what is often described as the deepest, richest trove of historical documents online
, with over six billion individuals catalogued. A 2011 edition of the Windows version has just been released.
Early this year, Ancestry.com expanded to another Apple platform: the iPhone. With the launch of its Tree To Go iPhone application in January 2010, Ancestry.com now gives users access to generations of family history at every turn. From their iPhone, users can easily upload photos, update sources and edit trees. The Tree To Go iPhone application is available for iPhone and iPod touch for free through the iPhone App Store or iTunes
Family Tree Maker for Mac is now available for purchase online at http://www.familytreemaker.com starting at US$69.99. The program is also available in select retail stores, including Apple Stores, Amazon, Office Depot, and Office Max.
