Angelina Jolie Denies Haiti Adoption Rumors
Angelina Jolie is denying reports that she plans to adopt an orphan from earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
Last week reports in British newspapers claimed that the Oscar-winner, who raises six children with partner Brad Pitt, was planning on adopting a four-year-old girl named Leah who lost her family in last year's earthquake in Port-au-Prince.
The actress's representative debunked the speculation Friday, saying that the 35-year-old was in Haiti to do philanthropic work.
"Earlier this week, the Daily Mirror U.K. and others reported that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are in the process of adopting a child from Haiti," spokesman Adam Waldman told The Daily Beast in a statement.
"There is no truth to these rumors.
"Rather, Ms. Jolie is focused on enhancing the welfare and legal protection of children within Haiti. As such, she has been meeting with government of Haiti officials, Haitian legal experts and non-governmental organizations regarding a new initiative of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation. The recently launched Jolie Legal Fellows Program will assist the justice system in Haiti to improve child protection," the statement added.
Three of Jolie and Pitt's six children were adopted: Maddox from Cambodia, Pax from Vietnam, and Zahara from Ethiopia.
