The public side of Apolo Ohno is fairly well known. The Olympic winner with eight medals to his name also works hard for his chosen charity SeeYourImpact.org. Ohno is a spokesman for the charity and promotes their work whenever he can.
The non-rofit not only lets people donate directly to someone in need, but also e-mails them to show exactly how their gift is making a difference. In a recent interview, he talks about his work and the charity.
SeeYourImpact.org was first brought to me by a close friend who has been involved with philanthropic work for many years, and he said, "Apolo, I know you are involved with a lot of different charitable organizations, but this is one that can help change billions of lives around the world."
I was always interested in affecting the lives within my community, and this is something that is the future of philanthropic giving, so I was very excited about it. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how much money you've made or how much money you are going to make, but how you can give back. Utilizing my success for a positive benefit, to help others, is something that really interested me.
You go to the website and pick a geographic region and cause that we want to focus on. So let's say I want to focus on an area in India and I want to focus on malnutrition or running water. And I would say, "I want to help this family out for the next six months and I want to donate this amount of dollars."
