Think you need yet another reason to slow down and relax? How about thinking of your healthy skin?
Stress may often be the culprit behind acne flare-ups, cold sores and outbreaks of eczema and psoriasis, and a recent San Francisco Veterans Medical Center study documented a scientific link between stress and the health of your skin.
After testing a group of students at times of varying stress -- such as during finals and after spring break -- researchers found that the skin's ability to protect the body was compromised during stressful periods, primarily because of the release of stress hormones, particularly cortisol.
Stress also weakens the immune system, opening the door for latent skin ailments like acne, herpes simplex 1 (cold sores), rosacea and psoriasis to appear, the study found.
So consider again the benefits of brushing up on your relaxation and stress-busting techniques, including meditation, deep-breathing exercises, muscle relaxation and massage, a proper night's sleep and regular exercise. And practice the following skin-care recommendations:
Drink plenty of water. Well-hydrated skin is healthier skin.
Eat nutritiously. In addition to providing your body with the best forms of energy, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, non-processed foods and low-fat dairy products are best for your skin.
Avoid the sun. Be careful to protect against sunburn.
Follow a good skin-care routine. Wash your face morning and night, remove all makeup before bed, and moisturize regularly.
If you are susceptible to skin disorders, and you know that you're heading into a stressful period, you can try to nip skin problems in the bud by being diligent about your relaxation breaks and by having the appropriate treatments and/or medications on hand. For example:
Psoriasis: Rich moisturizers and prescription creams with Vitamin D
Eczema: Moisturizing creams without steroids
Rosacea: Antibiotic ointments
Acne: Benzoyl peroxide
Cold sores: Valtrex and over-the-counter treatments.
