Vitamin E Accolades Keep Coming

Vitamin E takes the cake among consumers when it comes to battling disease and aging.

The antioxidant is the most widely purchased nutritional supplement in the nation. It has been termed "nutrient of the year" by Food Processing magazine and as one of the "top 10 medical advances" by the magazine Health.

Food Processing cited vitamin E's "role in immunity and in fighting Alzheimer's disease" based on studies showing it to be beneficial in improving the immune functions and slowing the progression of Alzheimer's.

Health magazine terms the vitamin a "potent weapon against aging" in its reported ability to clear tissue-damaging molecules called free radicals from arteries and possibly helping prevent heart disease.

Meanwhile a study conducted for the New York vitamin manufacturer NBTY Inc., indicates vitamin E led the list of the 10 most-purchased nutritional supplements used by U.S. consumers. Vitamin C was second.
