Bleaching those Pearlies: Safe?

Interested in using a bleach formula to whiten your teeth but worried about gum damage? No problem, dental experts report.

A study on 10 percent carbamide peroxide bleaching gel, a common whitener, found using the whitener creates no detectable damage to oral or gum tissue.

Comparing a group who used the gel and a group using a placebo, researchers did not find any harmful affects from the bleach whitener to the gums or soft tissue in the mouth after two weeks of use.

Dentists use the 10 percent carbamide peroxide in the solution, applied in a home bleaching process called NightGuard -- a process in which mouth trays filled with the bleach are worn during the night.
