Easing Heartburn Without Antacids
Taking a lot of antacids? Medical experts say there are ways to ease heartburn without resorting to over-the-counter remedies.
Dr. Don Bradley, vice president of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, recommends these common-sense steps: - Slow down. Eating any food quickly can cause an upset stomach. Cut down on caffeine. It makes your stomach produce more acid.
- Watch out for high-acid foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes.
- Stay upright after eating.
- Chew your food well. Saliva contains bicarbonate which helps neutralize stomach acid.
- Eat three meals a day so acid in your stomach doesn't build up.
- Don't eat huge meals. They can displace stomach acid into the esophagus.
