Donate That Old PC

Got an old laptop, desk PC or Macintosh stashed in the closet? Scrounge might want it -- for elementary schools and maybe even preschoolers. They don't need much computing power, according to the Penn State teachers and volunteers who staff scrounge.

Scrounge isn't alone. Try the East West Foundation, a Boston-based organization that may send your old computer far afield -- overseas even. The federal government also is in on the act.

Although Computers For Living is mainly about spreading used government computers around in the most effective way, you can click on "tech volunteers" in your neighborhood to see who needs an old computer.

If you want to "recycle" your machine try EPR2Project, which offers a "how-to" guide on donating used computers, links to donating organizations and advice on how to recycle the machine's innards which may contain small amounts of gold, silver and platinum.
