Gingivitis is a bacterial infection that leaves the gums swollen and sore, and millions suffering in agony. It can be difficult to eradicate, but a British expert in alternative medication says a toothpaste based on the aloe vera plant shows considerable promise.
Dr. John Briffa says extract from aloe vera has been proved to have soothing and healing properties. Now, EMI Laboratories has used the substance in its Aloe Dent toothpaste, along with another ingredient, chitin, which is known to be effective in combating organisms that may infect the gums.
Briffa says some of his patients have found that after using the toothpaste for a month or so, the inflammation of gingivitis was halted and gums began returning to a normal, healthy state.
But Briffa also says sufferers from gingivitis are advised to clean their teeth with a soft toothbrush. And, he adds, they should see their dentist or hygienist on a regular basis for treatment and descaling of the teeth, as necessary, for good dental health.
