Go for the Good Sugar

Dealing with sugar craving is a common problem for folks looking to keep fit, especially when adhering to popular high-protein diets. ThirdAge fitness guru Chad Tackett says be on guard against bingeing on foods with low nutritional value for a start.

Sugar is a simple carbohydrate and those who try to avoid "bad foods" as described in the high-protein programs, will consequently crave foods rich in carbohydrates, such as foods high in sugar. If the craving strikes, try to stick to carbohydrate-rich foods such as fruit instead of candy.

Up to 65 percent of your total daily calories should come from carbohydrates, and at least 50 percent should be the complex kind. Most people should consume between 350-450 grams of carbohydrates per day.

Most of this should come from foods rich in complex carbohydrates, with accompanying fiber; some would be the naturally occurring sugars of fruits, vegetables, and milk; and only 10 percent or less should come from other sugars.
