Wavelengths salon [Lancaster, Pa.] owner Donna Sheaffer, who does Hennessy's hair, said she sees more men than women deciding to go all-natural.
"If you have a really striking face, it makes a total package," said Sheaffer.
Sheaffer said those with shades of gray look better with short hair. In many cases, gray hair is more wiry than the client's original hair so it is much easier to manage if it is short.
In a column he wrote for Details magazine, CNN's Cooper, who has a close-cropped 'do, follows that advice.
"The most important thing about going gray: Keep it short. Grow it long, and all of a sudden you look like a roadie for Peter, Paul and Mary. Not the image you want to go for," Cooper wrote.
Wavelengths' stylist Andrea Greider said graying hair looks better with some people, particularly former brunettes who have a "cooler color," or blue undertones to their complexions.
She believes that people who allow themselves to go prematurely gray are confident with themselves.
"It takes a self-assured person to wear silver hair prematurely,'' she said.
That definitely appears to be the case with Trego, Brogan, Hampton and Hennessy.
"I don't pay much attention to how much gray I have or don't have," said Brogan. "I am only aware of it because people point it out or remark about it."
On her often catty blog, www.badhairday.typepad.com, Alexandra Seuthe comments about celebrity hair disasters and victories.
She said she believes American Idol Hicks' hair is a reflection of his confidence.
"Taylor is my hair idol. Why?" she wrote. "Because he does his very best with the hair that he naturally has -- and for many people (including the millions who dye over their gray) that is a difficult thing to do.
"Taylor's hair showed that he wasn't afraid to be himself.
"I think that appeals to people who are sick of cookie cutter pop stars. His hair and his talent are authentic -- and that is why he won. Your move, Britney Spears."
Meow.
In a phone interview from Orange County, Calif. (where she traveled from her new home in Las Vegas, Nev., to get her hair done), Seuthe said that it is still easier for men to go gray than women.
"It is a double standard," said the 24-year-old who admitted she is hair-obsessed. "Men are allowed to age and women can't."
