Not everyone thinks mineral makeup is monumental. Cosmetic expert Paula Begoun, author of Don't Go to the Cosmetic Counter Without Me (Beginning Press, 2003), has said she thinks mineral makeup is messy and can look powdery and dry on the skin.
But there seems to be no stopping the mineral makeup juggernaut.
Even nonmedical clients are gravitating toward mineral makeup, said Shannyn Pareo, manager of the Fountain of Youth Day Spa at Albuquerque Dermatology Associates.
"We prefer it for everyone over regular makeup," said Pareo, who uses the Colorescience and Jane Iredale lines.
Traditional beauty salons and health clubs are also incorporating mineral makeup into their routines.
Melissa Hernandez, owner of the Full Circle Wellness Center, said she loves the fact that mineral makeup satisfies the "cruelty-free" requirements of people who don't want any kind of animal products on their skin.
Her center, which offers acupuncture, Pilates and other health services, offers clients the whole range of Jane Iredale products.
Even customers who don't care about what's in the makeup love mineral makeup's luminescent look, said Hernandez.
"People are just coming in off the street asking for it," she said. "It pretty much sells itself."
