Asher Brown, 13-year-old, Commits Suicide As a Result of Bullying; Parents Speak Out

Asher Brown is one of the reported teen suicides this month resulting from bullying. The 13-year-old from Texas shot himself at his home last week.

But now, his parents, David and Amy Truong, are speaking out.

They held a news conference, confronting Hamilton Junior High School for their lack of communication and negligence.

They talked about the nature of the bullying their son endured. He had been teased by other students since the sixth grade about his sexual orientation and his religion. He was being targeted for being gay, and students would combine that with his Buddhism.

According to mother Amy, They would insult him because he was Buddhist, and they would call him booty boy and try to link the two together between Buddhism and homosexuality.

Additionally, father David talked about his failed attempts to contact school officials.

I said, Sir I dont remember their names, the coaches Asher Brown or Killian Brown, our other son, theyve been harassed, or theyve been ganged up on. I would use different words of what was done to them, he remembered. We need to talk. And there were no returns. Or I would go there, and when I would go there, I would even sometimes dress in a full suit to try and get a different response. No. They said, You dont have an appointment.

The bullying was so severe, their son was also physically being abused. This bully, we cant say his name, deliberately tripped Asher down two flights of stairs.Other students say that in response, Asher told the bully, You better apologize, or Im gonna kill myself.Meanwhile, the Human Rights Campaign has responded and released a statement. This young man had a wonderful life ahead of him, but he was bullied to death because he was gay. This tragedy was preventable. We urge school districts and stage legislatures everywhere to implement anti-bullying policies and laws that protect all students.
