Best Green Celebrity Announced At Eco Awards

A wind farm. Green energy is being prioritized more, after 24 Illinois businesses were selected for grants to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in their operations.

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen was named the "best green celebrity" at the sixth annual Green Awards ceremony at the National Museum of London Thursday.

Bündchen, a Brazilian supermodel who used her celebrity to bring awareness to multiple environmental campaigns, beat former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and Spanish actor and musician Miguel Bose in an online vote, AFP reports.

In 2009, the 31-year-old model became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme, according to AFP. Since then, she has supported environmental initiatives such as The Drop Of Water Movement, which seeks to prevent the construction of a Brazilian dam which could destroy a significant portion of the Amazon rain forest.

Created in 2006, the International Green Awards honor an array of NGOs, businesses and individuals that have made extraordinary efforts in promoting environmental initiatives, AFP reports. Last year the awards opened to international entries.

The awards are comprised of 20 different categories, according to the AFP. The public votes on which celebrities should be awarded, while a panel of qualified industry leaders select the others.
