Billy Joel Responds to Insults from Elton John
Billy Joel responded to allegations that he was a washed-up alcoholic from former tour partner Elton John, saying he would not want the long-time friendship to be ruined by off-handed comments.
John said in a Rolling Stone magazine interview that Joels career was coasting on fear and laziness and that the Piano Man needed to enter rehab.
Initially following the printing of the article, Joel said, "I've enjoyed our relationship too much to let something as random as these comments change my affection for him. Elton is just being Elton."
Later, Joel, 61, issued a four-point statement to E! News covering individual issues raised by John.
"1. I do not hate Elton John," he said, in response to his pal's claim that Joel would "hate me for saying this."
"2. I do not want to 'punch him in the face.'"
"3. If he wants to call me, my number is still the same."
"4. Good luck with the movie."
Joel is referring to Gnomeo and Juliet in his fourth point, a film that John wrote and sang the music for.
