Coast Guard an Important Part of Mariner Safety, Security

The Coast Guard is always ready. They have to be thats their motto: Semper Paratus. The U.S. Coast Guards main roles include maritime safety and security. And in the last few weeks theyve been getting media attention with the formation of Hurricane Earl and the Gulf of Mexico oil rig explosion.

According to BostonHerald.com, the Coast Guard is ordering the temporary closure of commercial ports in North Carolina, until Hurricane Earl makes it way past the states waters. The Wall Street Journal also reports that the Coast Guard will participate in the investigation of the Mariner platform fire off the coast of Louisiana. Currently Coast Guard vessels are on site at the Mariner Energy Inc. platform and have found no evidence of an oil sheen on the surface of the gulf as a result of the explosion and fire.

Unlike other branches in the military, the Coast Guard is deployed every day.
