Contact Lens Recall Continues As FDA Evaluates

CooperVisions recall of its Avaira Toric contact lenses continues.

Contact lens maker CooperVision’s recall of more than 600,000 pairs of contact lenses will continue while the FDA evaluates the firm’s handling of the situation, WebMD reports.

According to the report, CooperVision and the FDA have exchanged letters and CooperVision is now awaiting the FDA’s response to its latest recall notice.

FDA spokeswoman Morgan Liscinsky told WebMD, "As it stands, the FDA is currently evaluating the (new recall) notification and will advise CooperVision of any concerns that it raises.”

The new notice from CooperVision comes after a seemingly vague initial recall notice put out on Aug. 19.

While the FDA cannot force a company to recall a product, it can issue its own separate recall notice if it is not satisfied with a company’s recall efforts.

The recall came after reports of torn corneas, severe eye pain and hazy vision associated with CooperVision’s Avaira Toric lenses. According to WebMD, CooperVision said it took numerous actions to aid its recall including sending worldwide notifications to both customers and providers, offering instructions for sending back the lenses and setting up a toll-free hotline.

WebMD reports that CooperVision attributes the problems arisen from the Avaira Toric lenses to "the unintended presence of a residue on certain lots.”

People who have problems with the lenses are urged to stop wearing them and see their eye care provider. People who are using the lenses and not experiencing problems should still contact CooperVision to find out if their lenses are part of the recall.

WebMD says that recalled lenses can be returned for a refund where they were bought.
