David Letterman Celebrates 30th Anniversary

FILE - In this April 21, 2010 file photo released by CBS, host David Letterman is shown on the set of the Late Show with David Letterman, in New York. Letterman is back at Late Show Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, after a two-week vacation, his first day at work since a threat against his life was posted on a website. Last week, a frequent contributor to a jihadist website posted a threat to Letterman. He urged Muslim followers to cut the tongue of the late-night host because of a joke the comic had made about al-Qaida leaders on his CBS show. On Wednesday, February 1st, "Late Show" host David Letterman celebrated a three-decade run on late night television with a raft of staffers who have been with him over the years. They roasted him genially with the "Ten Things Staffers Would Like To Say To Dave on His 30th Anniversary in Late Night." Some of the choice items were “I stopped watching in ’92” and “My therapist says I have Stockholm Syndrome.”

Dave, who will turn 65 in April of 2012, also invited guests including Howard Stern and Bill Murray. Stern and Dave marked the occasion by ribbing one another while they looked at photographs of their haircuts during appearances on the show since the 1980s. They ended the segment by congratulating themselves on looking better now than they did then.

Murray, who was Letterman's first guest on February 1st 1982, brought a cupcake studded with 30 candles. When he lit them with matches and a lighter, he dropped burning matches on the floor by accident and the resulting blaze nearly went out of control.

Johnny Carson, reportedly Dave's idol, was the host of the Tonight Show for 29 years and eight months. That means Dave's 30-year anniversary takes the record.
