Deli Meat Recall Affects Nearly 400,000 Pounds of Meat

A deli meat recall is affecting 380,000 pounds of meat, those that can be found in Grab and Go Sandwiches from Zemco Industries in the Buffalo, New York area.

The recall was announced by the US Department of Agriculture on Tuesday. The sandwiches with the possibly contaminated meat can be found at Wal-Mart stores nationwide, and have already been pulled from shelves.

The meats involved in the Grab and Go Sandwiches are black forest ham, hot ham, hard salami, and pepperoni, Virginia ham, and Angus roast beef.

The packages include the vendor number 398412808 and the production dates of June 18 through July 2, the USDAs Food Safety and Inspection Services said.

Although no illnesses have been reported in association with the products, the recall is prompted by potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

According to Tyson Foods spokesman Gary Mickelson, a retail sample was collected in Georgia and tested positive for contamination. Zemco Industries is a division of Tyson Foods.

Listeriosis, the illness related to the pathogen, can cause fever, headache, neck stiffness and nausea. It can be fatal in some cases. In other cases, it can potentially cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
