Male depression is expected to become a factor for more Americans in the coming years because of growing social and economic pressures.
In an editorial piece written for The British Journal of Psychiatry, a series of experts shared their concerns.
"Western men, particularly those with low education levels, will face a difficult road in the 21st century. It may be more difficult, on average, for men to adjust to a domestic role than for women to adjust to a work role."
In todays society women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression but the reasons behind that fact remain unclear.
One major force behind the expected increase in depression for men is because of the widespread economic recession. Some even playfully call the recession a mancession because it has hit male-dominated jobs like construction and manufacturing particularly hard.
While men are losing their jobs, many women are using the time to seek out higher levels of education, which could lead to more depression for men in the future.
Thanks to sociological pressures, many men are mentally programmed to be the primary source of income in a family. If that balance is jeopardized, depression will be one of the most common reactions for men who are then focused on running things around the home.
