Elizabeth Edwards' cancer has spread to her liver and doctors have advised against further chemotherapy, People magazine reported.
The 61-year-old now estranged wife of presidential hopeful John Edward's has been battling the disease for six years. She is now resting at home with her family.
"The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered," Edwards wrote on her Facebook page Monday. "We know that. And yes, there are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful."
Elizabeth Edwards has shared the most intimate details about her disease all in a fight to help reform the American health care system. She was diagnosed in the final days of the 2004 presidential campiagn when her husband was the Democratic vice presidential nominee. The couple have three children - Cate, Emma Claire and Jack. Son Wade was killed in a traffic accident when he was 16.
Her ex- husband says he continues to support her.
"It isn't possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel towards everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know," Edwards, a popular figure among Democratic activists, wrote on the Facebook post.
