Elizabeth Edwards', estranged wife of former vice presidential candidate John Edwards, will be buried today alongside her 16-year-old son in a private service.
Edwards succumbed to cancer last tuesday. Her son, Wade, died in a car accident in 1996.
A funeral service, open to the public, was held earlier today.
It took place at Edenton Street United Methodist, a North Carolina church Edwards found solace in when Wade passed away.
Daughter Cate, 28, remembered Edwards as a "lighthouse" for her family.
Giving a eulogy, Cate said "there aren't words that are good enough."
The Edwards have other two children, Emma Claire, 12, and Jack, 10.
Cate went on to talk about her mother's support for her family, saying:
"She was way more worried about us than we were about her."
Eulogies were also given by two of Elizabeth Edwards' longtime friends, Hargrave McElroy and Glenn Bergenfield.
John Edwards didn't speak.
Elizabeth Edwards was diagnosed with cancer in 2004.
Her diagnosis came after Edward's bid for vice presidency ended when John Kerry lost to George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election.
Following treatment, doctors declared her cancer-free but the disease returned in an incurable form in 2007.
