Elizabeth Warren Electrifies Progressive Base

Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren reached what The Ticket referred to as “rock star” status this week after a video of her discussing President Barack Obama’s tax plan was posted on YouTube. According to the website, the video of Warren during a pre-campaign tour in August was posted by someone claiming to be unaffiliated with her campaign.

The former White House adviser was discussing the contention between Democrats and Republicans over Obama’s plan to roll back tax cuts on the wealthy when she denounced the idea that doing so amounted to “class warfare.”

“I hear all this, you know, ‘Well, this is class warfare, this is whatever,’” Warren said. “No. There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody.”

“You built a factor out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.”

She concluded, “Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.” Warren officially joined the Senate race last week, preparing to take on incumbent Sen. Scott Brown. A poll released Tuesday by the Public Policy Polling survey found that Warren is now statistically tied with Brown after erasing the senator’s initial 15 point lead.
