Glenn Beck Tours Israel

Fox News TV host Glenn Beck speaks at his Restoring Honor rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on August 28, 2010.

Glenn Beck, the former Fox News personality and nationally-syndicated radio host, is touring Israel this week culminating in his “Restoring Courage” rally on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Times reported said that the purpose of his visit and the rally near the Western Wall and the Dome of the Rock mosque “is to demonstrate American solidarity with Israel.”

“Now is the time to Stand and Restore courage,” said a statement from his website on the “Restoring Courage” rally. “We ask those of you who value freedom, honor and faith to travel to Israel and stand with Glenn Beck and leaders from around the world with one united voice.”

Many of Beck’s listeners will likely attend Wednesday’s rally and Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain will fly to Israel on Tuesday, reported POLITICO.

Beck’s visit comes at a turbulent time for Israel as the large protest movement against the current economic state and rising prices is underway, reports the Atlantic magazine. On Thursday, eight Israelis died in terror attacks in the southern part of the country near its border with Egypt, prompting air strikes in Gaza against the suspected terror masterminds and a counter-offensive from Gaza terror groups.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the controversial host’s week-long visit is stirring debate as to whether he should be considered as a friend to Israel or condemned as a “fanatic” accused of making perceived anti-Semitic remarks. Though he was little known in the country before his visit, his events have attracted attention from his supporters and opponents. The article stated that Israel conservatives praise him for his strong support for Israeli control over Jerusalem and his criticism of a Palestinian state, including outspoken Likud Party member Danny Danon. "He is a friend who supports Israel, and we should work with him," said Danon, who supports bringing the West Bank in Israeli hands. "It's important for us to see that there are people out there who support us and not all the world is against us." However, the Los Angeles Times added that Beck’s controversial statements, such as likening the Norwegian youths gunned down at a summer camp last month to “Hitler Youth” and calling Reform Judaism to “radicalized Islam” has displeased critics who think he is not an appropriate spokesperson for Israel.
