Hurricane Fiona Loses Steam as it Approaches Bermuda

Hurricane Fiona appears to have lost enough steam as it approaches Bermuda that it is now being classified as a tropical storm. It is expected to pass by Bermuda sometime early Saturday morning and while it still could deliver heavy rains, the potential damage from it appears to have decreased.

Fiona, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, was moving north-northeast at 13 mph 245 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, the hurricane center said Friday in its 11 a.m. EDT advisory. The storm's forward speed is expected to increase somewhat Sunday.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Bermuda, which could get 1 to 3 inches of rain.

The storm was expected to gradually weaken and could become a tropical depression by Saturday, the center said.
