Iran is believed to have received missiles from North Korea that can strike Western Europe, WikiLeaks cables revealed Sunday suggest.
The classified cables indicate that the U.S. has fears of Iran's growing nuclear program. Arab states are pushing for measures to stop Iran just as much as Israel is, the documents revealed.
In the secret cables leaked by the online whistle-blower, the king of Bahrain, who hosts the U.S. 5th fleet, tells the U.S. the Iranian nuclear program "must be stopped" and says, "The danger of letting it go on is greater than the danger of stopping it."
The missiles could potentially reach Moscow and cities across Western Europe, The Washington Post reported.
King Abdullah of Saudia Arabia was also among Arab allies who demanded an end to Iran's nuclear program, pleading U.S. officials in 2008 to "cut off the head of the snake."
The accounts are part of a report released Sunday in the New York Times, one of the news organizations allowed early access to the WikiLeaks cables.
According to UPI, U.S. allies feared that Barack Obama's policy of engagement would make him appear weak to Iran. In response his aides devised a plan to encircle Iran with economic sanctions and anti-missile defenses.
To facilitate that plan, the U.S. persuaded the Saudis to supply China with oil to free the country from dependence on Iran. The Saudis agreed, on the condition that China join the sanctions, UPI said.
