James Cameron, director of "Avatar," is working on a 3D action thriller project set in the perilous world of cave-diving.

Sanctum is about a group of adventurous explorers who get trapped in one of the largest subterranean caves on the planet. It is based on Andrew Wights memoir. Wight co-wrote the screenplay and Cameron is the Executive Producer.

"I'll have anything to do with exploration. You know, pushing the boundaries of the known. This movie, sure it's about bad stuff that happens to you when you get trapped in a collapsed cave, but it's also about the spirit of the explorer, said Cameron.

"I'd like to think there may be a point in time that people will look back [on 'Sanctum'] and say, 'Hey, that film was significant in that it showed people there was a way forward for 3-D,'" Wight said, adding, "3-D is part of the next evolution of cinema whether people want to admit to it or not."

Sanctum hits theaters in February.
