Janet Jackson Becomes Nutrisystem Weight Loss Program Spokeswoman

Storied pop star Janet Jackson will serve as the “new face” of Nutrisystem’s SUCCESS weight loss program, the company announced on Thursday.

The regimen “is designed to help take the weight off and keep it off through frequent, portion-controlled, balanced nutrition and low Glycemic Index eating,” Nutrisystem said in a statement.

Jackson wrote candidly about her struggle with weight issues in her 2011 bestseller “True You.” In the memoir, which hits store shelves in paperback this week, the famed Jackson family member discusses a time in 2006 when she swelled to 180 lbs for a movie role, becoming the butt of fat jokes in the tabloids.

But aside from the pounds she packed on for her acting work, weight gain “is something I’ve dealt with my whole life,” she told Reuters in an interview.

"Dieting never worked for me, counting calories never worked for me, and denying myself the foods I love never worked for me. I needed a better plan, and I found it with Nutrisystem," Jackson revealed in Thursday’s statement. "With Nutrisystem I am seeing results already, and I am so impressed by both the thought and the nutritional science behind the program. There are millions of women like me who want to be successful but don't have the tools to do it on their own.  I hope I can help inspire them."

Nutrisystem and Jackson also announced the establishment of a philanthropic foundation called Nutribank, which “will work closely with national and international organizations to donate nutritious food and raise funds and awareness for this important cause,” according to Nutrisystem’s statement. The company will donate $1 worth of food to those in need for every pound lost on Nutrisystem in 2012.
