Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, traveled to Athens Sunday to present an award to athletes in the 2011 Special Olympics.
Assembled in the Olympic Stadium Aquatics Venue, Biden and her daughter Ashley congratulated medalists in the women's 800-meter freestyle.
Biden, accompanied by U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, visited sailors on the U.S. guided-missile destroyer Ramage, and attended a re- enlistment ceremony for several sailors, according to a White House press statement.
While on the ship, anchored off Athens, Biden told reporters "I am looking forward to watching the Games and cheering the athletes."
The Special Olympics is the biggest sporting event in Greece since Athens hosted the Olympic Summer Games in 2004, reported the Los Angeles Times. The Special Olympics hosts 7,000 athletes from more than 170 countries.
