Kelsey Hawkes made an appearance on CBSs Early Show to explain who Jared Loughner was before, when she and the suspected shooter dated while in high school six years ago.

She hasnt spoken to Loughner since, but over the years received updates about how he was doing.

Hawkes recalled a kinder boy: Six years ago, we dated, and back then he was completely different of a person, very caring, very gentle, very sweet, kind, a little quiet, but altogether a pretty great guy.

However, as years passed, after the two were no longer together, she would hear updates about him from friends, and only heard bad news.

I seemed to get the impression that he was becoming a little more isolated. Some involvement in drugs and alcohol, I had heard hints of. But yeah, never anything good to hear about how he was doing, but I didnt try to gain contact with him after hearing anything, nor did he with me.

When asked if she ever thought he was capable of such violent acts, Hawkes said, Absolutely not.

"It was probably one of the most surprising things I've ever heard in my life. I had been at work that day, and I heard pieces of characteristics about this person who had done all of this. And finally when I learned who it was, things just fell together and I just couldn't believe it.

It was very emotional. I was very upset that the person that I used to know could become so changed and turn into something else. Someone I knew six years ago and hadn't spoken to in five years, I can only imagine what's been going on with him," she said.
