Mobile industry predictions for 2011 show that Google's Android operating system will expand this year, garnering one of the top mobile industry stories. The annual predictions survey, conducted by Chetan Sharma Consulting, consisted of predictions from 225 mobile executives who gave insights and comments as to the upcoming happenings of the expanding mobile industry.

According to the survey, fifty-three percent say that Android tablet sales will exceed iOS tablet sales in 2011. Perhaps this has to do with acquisitions, which experts predicted Google to make the biggest mobile acquisition this year.

A report released Monday by Nielsen, the market research company, Apple's iPhone operating system currently controls 28.6 percent of the smartphone market. Although it is still the top mobile OS in the U.S, Google's Android platform is close behind, controlling 25.8 percent, the Los Angeles Times reported.

PCMag.com is issuing different numbers for Google, however. According to the website, Android is in second at 26.1 percent.

The discrepancy in numbers don't take away from the fact that within the mobile industry, smartphones continue to grow at a significant rate, and will continue to do so in 2011.

Also according to the survey, the mobile experts predicted that the Verizon iPhone will launch during the second quarter of 2011. As for which company will be the most open player in the mobile industry in 2011, that would be Google. Furthermore, one of the biggest breakthroughs in the mobile industry for 2011 lies in the category of mobile payments.

Looking forward to what's going on in the mobile industry in 2011? Do you think Google Android has what it takes to top the Apple operating system?
