It's Not Easy Being Green |

by Maggie Griffin Heeger
I remember the first Earth Day back in 1970. I was a teen-ager and I could feel the history-making atmosphere that day. I remember rallies and protests, classroom discussions, TV commercials, huge public awareness and the feeling that the older people were wrong: this wasn't just a hippie thing. It would make a difference.
We still do Earth Day, but it sure isn't what it used to be. You hardly even hear about it. Maybe it's because environmental concern isn't such a radical thing anymore. Recycling bins are commonplace. At work, many of us drink from our own ceramic coffee mugs instead of disposable Styrofoam cups. Some of us even bring cloth bags to the grocery store to carry home our food. We do it all without thinking -- so maybe the reason it's no big deal is because Earth Day achieved its purpose after all.
