Let's see -- SUV, check! Wide-screen TV, check! Digital camera, check! Two computers, check!
The other day as I tuned into my favorite "oldies" station, I heard that song ranting about "another Pleasant Valley Sunday, here in status symbol land." The lyrics have been pounding in my brain ever since.
What happened? Remember those days when we looked down our noses on the material things? We were going to be different, boy, oh boy. No status symbol land for us.
We weren't interested in keeping up with the Joneses in their split-level ranch. There'd be no parties to show off the newly-finished "rec" room in the basement. No, we would only work to survive, not acquire. Bricks and boards for bookshelves and thrift shops for clothes would do just fine, thank you. Next >
