Stolen Van Gogh Painting Worth $50 Million Still Missing

The stolen Van Gogh painting still hasnt been found and police are still searching for the painting and its thief.Authorities were hunting Saturday for the $50 million Vincent Van Gogh painting stolen from a Cairo museum, Farouk Hosni, Egypts culture minister said.The painting by the 19th century Dutch post-impressionist, Vase with Flowers, also known as Poppy Flowers, was stolen from the Mahmoud Khali Museum in Cairo, The Daily Telegraph reported.According to CNN, Hosni said in a statement Saturday night the artwork was still missing despite earlier reports that it had been recovered.Airport security officials detained a young Italian man and women who were trying to leave the country for suspicious behavior. Ten other people have been questioned and released Sunday but remain under investigation on similar accusations.None of the alarms and only seven out of 43 surveillance cameras were working at the museum. Prosecutor general Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud told Egypts state news agency Sunday that the thieves used a box cutter to remove the painting from its frame. He blamed the heist on the museums lax security measures he called feeble and superficial.As a result, Egypt Deputy Culture Minister Mohsen Shalaan has also been detained, along with four security guards, for neglect and professional delinquency, according to the Middle East News Agency. So far no formal charges have been filed.This is the second time this particular painting has been stolen from the Kahlil museum. Thieves first made off with the canvas in 1978, before authorities recovered it two years later at an undisclosed location in Kuwait.
