Westboro Baptist Church to Protest at Powell Boys' Funeral

Powell had long been a person of interest in his wife’s disappearance from their home in West Valley City, Utah, two years ago. When Powells two sons arrived Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, for a court-ordered, supervised child custody visit with their father, Powell barred a social worker from entering and then torched the house. The Westboro Baptist Church intends to picket the Tacoma funeral of the Powell brothers, and may be met with a counter-protest, a report said Thursday.

The Kansas church, notorious for its stance that tolerance of homosexuality is the cause of God's anger with America, will be present at the Tacoma memorial service of Charlie and Braden Powell, who died after their father burned down their home earlier in the week, a Twitter feed from Maggie Phelps, daughter of the Church's pastor, said. A later Twitter comment from Phelps referenced the state of Washington's pending legalization of same-sex marriage, expected to be signed by the governor next week.

"This is why God's cursed you w Josh Powells blowing up kids," her message read.

The group Occupy Seattle is using its Facebook page to mobilize a counter-protest, The (Tacoma) News Tribune reported Thursday, saying it would not disrupt the funeral but will attempt to "protect it from Westboro's abhorrent message."
